Do you work as a writer, editor, or graphic designer? Are you thinking about launching your own business? Learn about the perks and pitfalls of freelancing from long-time members and volunteers with the Professional Writers Association of Canada’s Toronto Chapter, Editors Toronto, and the Association of Registered Graphic Designers. Topics include how to find clients, working with other creative professionals, and more practical information for freelancers. The presentation includes a Q&A session.

Raise More Money for Your Cause with Video and Social Media
(Social Media Week 2013)


This free two-hour workshop was geared to fundraising, marketing, and communications professionals at small nonprofits and charities. It was designed to help them add video to their communications toolkit. Presenters Karen Luttrell and Peter Reynolds:

• Described different types of fundraising videos and what is needed to create them
• Shared tips and processes for planning your fundraising video strategy and implementing it in a cost-effective manner
• Showed how to develop a practical social media strategy that will get your video seen and drive response.


Taking Twitter Tactics for Your Small Charity to the Next Level
(Social Media Week 2013)

This workshop helped fundraising and communications professionals, at small charities, who have added social media to their responsibilities without a lot of extra time for training and strategy developmen. It was specifically designed for people who had set up their organization’s Twitter account, started to build a following, and were tweeting regularly but needed help:

  • planning a sustainable content strategy
  • reaching more people on Twitter and engaging them in relevant conversation
  • connecting their Twitter activity to their organizational goals and measuring their effectiveness
  • deciding what Twitter activities to prioritize with their limited time
  • finding tools to help them work more efficiently

Presenter and facilitator Karen Luttrell shared tips, checklists and worksheets as well as real examples of what has worked in her experience. The workshop included a group discussion of common challenges and what solutions have worked for peers.


Fundraising and the Power of Video: Tips and Tricks to Increase Donor Retention

Karen co-presented with Peter Reynolds of For the Record Productions at this annual conference held by The Association of Fundraising Professionals, Toronto Chapter. This practical session looked at how fundraisers can use video to retain donors,  how they can use social media to get their videos seen, and how they can track and measure the results from their videos.

Karen facilitated a small group breakout discussion on getting started with social media at this seminar by the Professional Writers Association of Canada Toronto Chapter and the Editors' Association of Canada.
